Internships

As a specialized academic library, we combine traditional library functions with the demands of a modern research environment. Our areas of activity range from library services and user support to academic publishing and digital information resources.

Interns have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in these diverse areas of work and to apply the theoretical knowledge they’ve acquired through their studies or training in a professional context. Depending on the duration and educational goals of their internship, they can take on their own tasks, work on smaller projects, and thus gain practical experience in library work.

We currently offer:

Students majoring in Library and Information Science (BA) or similar programs have the opportunity to complete a mandatory internship at the Albert Einstein Science Park’s shared library.

The internship provides a comprehensive insight into the work of a specialized academic library and offers the opportunity to become familiar with various areas of library work.

Possible areas of assignment include, among others:

User support and information services
Acquisitions and collection management
Cataloging and metadata management
Publication management and open access
Research data and digital information resources
Information literacy instruction
Other current library tasks and projects

Where possible, the specific focus of the internship will be tailored to the student’s individual interests, areas of study, and the library’s current priorities.

We offer two- to three-week internships for trainees as part of their training to become specialists in media and information services, specializing in library services.

As part of the training program, trainees become familiar with various areas and aspects of the profession. In the second year of training, a specialized internship offers the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of one of other specializations (Archives, Libraries, Information and Documentation). In addition, trainees can gain insights into a different type of library through an exchange internship between public and academic libraries.

The internship at our library offers the opportunity to learn about working in a specialized academic library and to apply what they have learned in a practical setting. It serves to provide information and hands-on experience, as well as to teach basic skills typical of the library specialization. In the process, trainees gain insights into various areas of library work and can expand their professional and organizational knowledge.

Students in grades 9 through 11 from all types of schools have the opportunity to learn about the work at our library through an informational internship. During the internship, they gain insight into various areas of work and can gain their first practical experience in the day-to-day operations of a library.

The internship also offers the opportunity to learn about the vocational training program for Media and Information Services Specialists (FaMI) and to gain an authentic impression of the diverse tasks and career prospects in an academic library.
