Project DEAL and Springer Nature

As of 1 January 2020, you will publish your articles in most Springer Nature journals in open access without incurring any personal costs. The contract covers both the publisher's hybrid journals and the genuine Open Access journals for eligible institutions (among others GFZ, PIK, AWI, IASS)

  • Start date for 1.900 hybrid journals ("Open Choice"): 1 January 2020
  • Start date for 600 fully open access journals: 1 August 2020

The date of the online publication is decisive ("Online Publication Date").

Elements of the new contract

  • Reading access for the entire e-journal portfolio including the back files until to 1997
  • Eligibility for authors of participating insitutions for hybrid open access publishing ("OpenChoice")
A list of journals can be found here.
  • 20% discount on Article Processing Charges (APCs) in genuine Open Access journals (excluding Nature Communications and Scientific Reports)

  • You are a researcher at GFZ, PIK or IASS and submit the paper as the responsible Corresponding Author.
  • You must clearly indicate your institutional affiliation when submitting your paper, via institutional e-mail adress or login from within our institutional network

Your article is one of the following article types:

  • In hybrid journals ("Open Choice"): original paper, review paper, letter communication, editorial notes, book reviews, letters, reports.
  • In Open Access journals ("Fully Open Access"): Original Paper, Review Paper, Brief Communication

How is the process?

  • If possible, please assign a Creative Commons license during the submitting/confirmation process. We recommend CC-BY, since it is the most common and unrestricted license, which allows reuse without limiting your copyright.
  • As soon as your article has been accepted for publication, you confirm your affiliation. Please make sure that the primary institution has been selected.
  • As soon as the assumption of costs has been approved, you will receive a confirmation by e-mail.
  • If payment has been refused, you will also be informed by e-mail.

Please contact us if you have any problems with your submission.

For GFZ authors: The Article Processing Charges will be first paid by the library as part of a collective invoice. Then, in consultation with the sections, the costs are transferred to the respective Account Assignment Elements (AAE). Depending on the AAE and availability, funds can be provided from the GFZ's publication fund (half of the article costs up to a maximum of 800 EUR).

Please note: Additional fees, such as coloured figures, preprints or posters, are excluded from the DEAL contract. These fees will be invoiced to the author directly and have to be paid completely by the section or from third-party funds.
